The Choice Every Veterinary Practice Owner Should Own

Name one person in vet school who said practicing veterinary medicine would be easy. After all, being an awesome doctor and practice manager are incredibly different skills. What makes your clinic or hospital different? Unfortunately mirroring the veterinarian down the street, whether intentionally or not, it something we see a lot!

I hope you had a chance to see our recent picture post.

Did you notice the irony in the picture? Did it make you feel uncomfortable or mad? We hope so! You see, gone are the days of one size fits all. Like it or not, veterinary medicine lives in this world of rapid change. The question is will you adopt, change, and embrace the opportunities, or die. Don’t be afraid of being different in your pricing, deliverables, management style, niche or inventory and service offerings. There are many possible ways to be unique.

Being different and embracing change are two different things. Or are they? While they may be or may not be different, who cares? I would suggest that being different from “the veterinarian down the street” not only where the opportunity lies, but also supports the very reason you wanted your own practice to begin with. Embracing change may make you different, but it’s not enough to sustain your practice. Continually adapting to our changing world is your lifeline prescription!

If you really wanted to be like everyone else, why not just work for that veterinarian down the street and practice your awesome medicine? After all, wouldn’t life be so much simpler and less stressful?

Why did you want to be a veterinarian in the first place? For most, it was to practice medicine. Whatever your reason, why not embrace the real reason you do what you do. Let your personality shine in all that you do. Want a different result? Stop whining, embrace change, dare to be different, and go all in with your strengths. Oh, and empower others to make up for your weaknesses.
